Skyhawks Drop Conference Opener at Blue Mountain

BLUE MOUNTAIN, Miss. – A three-game win streak came to a close on Friday night for the Point University Skyhawks when they fell 7-4 to the Blue Mountain Christian University Toppers at the BMCU Sportsplex. It was their first matchup against a Southern States Athletic Conference opponent in the 2026 season.

The Toppers cracked the scoreboard in the first inning on a passed ball with the bases loaded, but Skyhawks starting pitcher Dylan Davis bounced back with two consecutive strikeouts. A Blue Mountain RBI double from Cody Presley advanced their lead to 2-0 in the ensuing inning before they plated another run on a base hit in the third.

The Skyhawks had trouble solving Blue Mountain starting pitcher Chip Harris, who tossed four perfect innings to start the night. In the fifth frame, Point finally saw a runner reach base courtesy of a Garrison Coleman two-out walk. In the next at-bat, Easton Harrison followed up with a base on balls of his own, but they were ultimately stranded on Harris' fourth strikeout of the game.

After the score shifted to 4-0 on another Toppers run scored via a passed ball, Point broke through. Jonathan Kohlman walked and eventually scored from third base as Bailey Stroud was caught trying to steal second. Arwin Burgos doubled to left field and was batted in by Damian Hernandez to trim the deficit in half at 4-2.

Blue Mountain went on to score three unanswered, but the Skyhawks didn't go down without a fight. Trailing 7-2 in the ninth, Oscar Soto sliced a pitch to left field to send home Will Hoggard. Soto then cashed in on an RBI knock from Kohlman, but the comeback was stalled by Jesse Hancock on the mound to solidify a save under his name.

Despite the loss, Point's Davis pitched five full innings, striking out four batters. He was followed out of the bullpen by Shane Otipoby, Eli Kirby and Jacob Rossi who each threw an inning. The Skyhawks overcame their early struggles in the batter's box and completed the game with seven hits, each from different players.

Tomorrow is a chance at redemption for the Skyhawks, as they'll play two against the Toppers in Blue Mountain. First pitch start times are 2:00 and 4:30pm EST.
