Big Innings Lead to Skyhawks’ Losses Against William Carey
WEST POINT, Ga. – The Point University Skyhawks welcomed the nationally-ranked William Carey University Crusaders to West Point Park on Friday afternoon, with the visitors scoring double digit runs in both games to win 12-3 and 13-9.
Game One:
An eight-run second inning by William Carey put the Skyhawks in an early hole that they couldn't escape in their 12-3 defeat. The Crusaders' best work came in the second inning when they sent 12 batters to the plate and scored eight runs.
Point found their first run of the game at the bottom of the third when Josiah Palomino delivered a run-scoring single to get Point on the board at 8-1. In the sixth, Damian Hernandez reached and later came home on a sacrifice fly by Caden Mills, trimming the deficit to 9-2. Point pushed one more run across in the bottom of the seventh as Hernandez singled and again scored on a Mills sacrifice fly, closing the final margin to 12-3.
Daniel Crabtree only went one and a third innings as the Skyhawks starter and he was followed by Harris Burns who pitched a bulk of the seven-inning game, totaling four full. He struck out three while allowing just one hit and a run.
Game Two:
For the second straight game, the outcome was decided by William Carey scoring in bunches, with the back half of the doubleheader seeing a 10-run seventh inning.
The Skyhawks controlled the opening innings with the team leading 5-3 through the sixth. The seventh featured 14 batters for William Carey as they turned the two run deficit into an eight run advantage of 13-5.
In response to the Crusaders scoring the game's first run, Damian Hernandez lifted an RBI single to left field to score Arwin Burgos and tie the game 1-1. William Carey added single runs in the third and fourth, including a solo home run by Franklin Hernandez to left field in the fourth, but Point responded again with a two-run fourth to even the momentum.
Arwin Burgos delivered one of the game's key swings for Point, doubling down the left-field line to drive in two runs as part of a two-run inning that pushed the Skyhawks to a 5-3 lead. That advantage backed a strong start from right-hander Dylan Davis, who worked 6.0 innings and limited William Carey to three runs on six hits. Davis struck out three and walked four, giving Point quality innings and a chance to secure the series-opening win.
Point scratched across four runs in the eighth inning. Brady Bye belted a 2-run RBI double to center, building the Skyhawks' hit total which would eventually reach 10. Offensively, Point's lineup matched William Carey with three doubles and drew nine walks, showing patience and power throughout the afternoon. However, three defensive errors and the pivotal seventh inning proved costly as William Carey finished with 13 runs on 12 hits.
The Skyhawks conclude the weekend series with William Carey tomorrow at 1:00pm at West Point Park.
