Skyhawks Secure First Conference Series Win with Split Doubleheader
WEST POINT, Ga. – The Point University Skyhawks got off to a promising start on Saturday afternoon with a 13-8 win in their doubleheader opener against Thomas University, but the Night Hawks took Game Two of the day 16-5 to prevent being swept on the weekend at West Point Park. Point's pair of wins on the weekend locked in the team's first series win against a Southern States Athletic Conference rival in 2026.
Game One:
The Skyhawks led 6–5 heading to the bottom of the fifth before the lineup sent 11 batters to the plate to create the final blow. A series of walks and singles set the table, and Burgos delivered sealed the deal with a two-run single as Point pushed the margin to 13–5. Thomas mounted a three-run rally in the top of the seventh, but Point's pitching staff closed the door to secure the home victory.
Burgos anchored the Skyhawks' offense from start to finish, going 4-for-5 with five RBIs, two runs scored and two stolen bases. He drove in at least one run in four different innings, starting with an RBI single in the first after Jonathan Kohlman was hit by a pitch and came around to score. Burgos later added an RBI groundout in the second, another run-scoring single in the fourth to restore a one-run lead, and capped his day with the two-RBI base hit in the decisive fifth.
Point applied pressure early, scoring three times in the first inning. After Kohlman reached on a hit-by-pitch, Burgos singled him in, and Damian Hernandez and Brady Bye followed with RBIs to make it 3–0. The Skyhawks added single runs in the second, third and fourth innings, steadily building a 6–5 advantage while taking advantage of eight total walks and solid contact. Bailey Stroud provided additional spark near the top of the order, finishing 3-for-3 with two runs scored, a walk and a sacrifice.
On the mound, starter Daniel Crabtree and reliever Harris Burns combined to navigate traffic and hold Thomas to eight runs on 10 hits while issuing only three walks. The duo threw 126 pitches over seven innings, recording three strikeouts and benefiting from clean defense behind them, as the Skyhawks played error-free baseball. Thomas pitchers, by contrast, were forced into 161 pitches in six innings, issuing eight walks while also allowing 10 hits and 13 earned runs.
Game Two:
Thomas came into the game with a vengeance, bringing three runners across the plate in the first inning. Between their hot start and a pair of five-run innings in the fifth and eighth, the Night Hawks showed a relentless 20-hit attack.
The Skyhawks showed flashes of strong offense, including a second inning where Brady Bye sparked the frame with a double and Dylan Lindsey followed with an RBI single. The momentum moved Point ahead 4-3.
The turning point came in the fifth. Thomas loaded the bases and cashed in with a five-run inning, capped by Thomas' three-run homer to left that pushed the visitors ahead 9-4. From there, Point's nine pitchers and their fielding alignment struggled to contain the Thomas lineup. Two more runs scored in the seventh, including one on a pitcher error and another on a wild pitch, as the deficit grew to 11-4.
At the dish, Point finished with five runs on six hits, including four doubles, and drew six walks while leaving nine runners on base. Defensively, the Skyhawks' five errors and three hit batters extended innings for a Thomas lineup that totaled 13 RBIs and four doubles to go with its lone home run. Thomas pitchers combined for eight innings with seven strikeouts, limiting Point's damage outside of the second inning, while Skyhawks pitchers absorbed 20 hits and 16 runs, 14 of them earned.
With three SSAC series in the books, the Skyhawks resume non-conference play this Tuesday, March 17 with a home doubleheader with the Talladega College Tornadoes. The first pitch will be tossed at 4:00pm EDT.
