Burgos Doubles, Triples in Loss to Tennessee Southern

PULASKI, Tenn. – Arwin Burgos took five bases and Jackson Divido laced a pair of singles on Friday night for the Point University Skyhawks, but the University of Tennessee Southern Firehawks overpowered them for a 10-0 win at Bobby Walker Field.

Tennessee Southern held an 8-0 advantage by the end of the fourth inning. The scoring got underway in the bottom of the first on Cooper Phillips' sacrifice fly, then the Firehawks added three more runs in the second. Masato Mizumori drove in a run on a fielder's choice, and both Evan Nelson and Zac Wilson followed with sacrifice flies as the lead grew to 4-0. A wild pitch brought home another run in the third, and Tennessee Southern made things out of reach in the fourth. Phillips delivered an RBI single, another run scored on a throwing error on a bunt, and Gage Beckner added a sacrifice fly to make it 8-0.

Point ended the night with five hits and stranded seven runners on base. Burgos provided the biggest offensive spark, going 2-for-4 with a double and a triple, recording both of Point's extra-base hits. The Skyhawks also drew four walks and Damian Hernandez stole a base, but Tennessee Southern's pitching staff kept every rally from developing.

The Firehawks put the game into an early finish in the eighth inning, scoring on an error and an RBI single. Jack Teague was Point's final pitcher of the night, outlasting the three that came before him with 4.1 innings thrown.

With the teams' first meeting complete, Point and Tennessee Southern will square off in another 'Battle of the Hawks' doubleheader tomorrow, with games set for 1:00 and 4:00pm.
