Skyhawks Fly Past Faulkner 10-5 in Weekday Matchup

WEST POINT, Ga. – The Point University Skyhawks tied together 14 hits on Tuesday evening to double up the Faulkner University Eagles 10-5 in a single matchup between the SSAC foes at West Point Park.

Faulkner struck first in the second inning when Anthony Bassett Torres doubled, then Alex Gonzalez and Marlon Oviedo each brought home a run on RBI fly balls for a 2-0 lead. Point answered immediately in the bottom of the third and changed the game. Arwin Burgos opened the flurry of runs with an RBI single, Brady Bye followed with another run-scoring hit, Jackson Divido added an RBI groundout, and Oscar Soto capped the inning with a two-run single as the Skyhawks moved in front 5-2.

The Skyhawks plated two more runs in the fourth, with Garrison Coleman contributing a double during the inning, then pushed the lead to 9-2 in the fifth. Divido scored during that stretch, and Josiah Palomino and Bailey Stroud also helped generate offense as Point continued to build separation.

Stroud was an all-around performer for the Skyhawks, going 4 for 5 with two runs scored, one RBI and two stolen bases. Coleman went 2 for 3 with two runs scored, an RBI and a double, while Soto drove in two runs. Damian Hernandez delivered the final insurance run in the eighth with a two-out RBI double that made it 10-2.

Point's pitching staff limited Faulkner to three hits over nine innings, even as Faulkner worked 11 walks and left 10 runners on base. The visitors made one last push in the ninth when Jordan Carter hit a two-run homer, trimming the margin to five, but the earlier damage from Point's third-inning barrage was too much to overcome.

The Skyhawks turned to 10 pitchers in the game compared to Faulkner's six.

Point heads to Louisiana this weekend with the opener of their three-game series against Loyola University New Orleans getting underway at 4:00pm EDT on Friday, April 17.
