Skyhawks Rally Ends Prematurely in 7-6 Loss to #14 Loyola

WESTWEGO, La. – The Point University Skyhawks gained two leads against the #14 Loyola University New Orleans Wolf Pack on Saturday afternoon, but they were unable to salvage one late as they came up short 7-6 at Segnette Field.

The game opened with Point taking the first lead in the second inning when Damian Hernandez drove a solo home run to left. Loyola mirrored it in the bottom half after Hunter Ponson singled and later scored on a balk. The Skyhawks went back in front in the third, but Loyola responded again when Nathan McDonald hit a two-run homer to left-center, giving the Wolf Pack a 3-2 edge.

Point reclaimed momentum in the fifth. Arwin Burgos lined an RBI single to left center, and an error later in the inning helped the Skyhawks turn that rally into a 4-3 lead. Loyola answered immediately in the bottom half. John Lewis delivered a two-RBI single through the left side, putting the home team back in front 5-4.

The Skyhawks kept pressing in the sixth. Jackson Divido came around on Dylan Lindsey's sacrifice fly to tie the game at 5-5. Loyola took the lead for good in the bottom of the inning when a throwing error allowed Drew Lee to score an unearned run. The Wolf Pack added what proved to be the difference in the seventh, when Tanner Powell crossed the plate on a passed ball for a 7-5 margin.

Point finished with 10 hits, matching Loyola's total, and got productive days from several hitters. Hernandez homered, drove in a run and drew two walks. Coleman went 2-for-2 and scored once, helping spark the ninth-inning push. The Skyhawks also got sacrifice flies from Lindsey and Kohlman and totaled six runs on 10 hits despite committing three errors.

The final week of the regular season is on the horizon for the Skyhawks and it begins with the opener of their three-game series against University of Mobile on Thursday, April 23 at 5:00pm EDT.
