Football Program to Begin This Fall
Point University announced today that it has contracted with Elite Performer Sports Academy (EPSA) to launch its club football program in fall 2011.
Elite Performer Sports Academy, founded by Erasmus Harvey, is a program for post-high school student-athletes to play football versus college-level competition and gain an extra year of playing experience, allowing for more exposure to college recruiters. In the past two years, EPSA has helped more than 50 players sign scholarships or receive scholarship offers.
Harvey is EPSA's head coach and a graduate of Valdosta State University, where he was a linebacker on the football team. As a student-athlete, Harvey was named an All Gulf South Conference linebacker three years in a row, and became the fourth-leading tackler in Valdosta State's history. He went on to serve as a defensive line coach and defensive coordinator at several high schools, and also served as defensive coordinator for the Cobb Saints prep program.
Although the Charger football team will begin at the club level in 2011, Point has applied for membership in the NAIA and hopes to field an NAIA football team in fall 2012.
"We are excited to be working with Erasmus Harvey and the EPSA staff to launch our first Charger football team," said Dean Collins, president. "Expanding our athletic programs allows us to give more young Christian athletes the opportunity to play at the collegiate level while receiving a faith-based higher education."
The first football tryouts will be held on the Atlanta Christian College soccer field March 19, with registration beginning at 9 a.m. The registration fee is $35. Interested players should contact Erasmus Harvey at 678-502-8153 or via email, and should bring transcripts or grade reports to the tryout. Players' participation on the football team is conditional upon application and acceptance to the college; financial aid is available for those who qualify (including athletic scholarships).
Atlanta Christian College will become Point University on July 1, 2011, and will relocate its traditional, residential campus to West Point, Ga., in fall 2012. Founded in 1937, the institution enrolls more than 1,000 students in adult and traditional programs. Point University's mission is to educate students for Christ-centered service and leadership throughout the world.
