Point football joins The Sun Conference

WEST POINT, GA- The Point University Skyhawks football program recently announced that it had been accepted into the newly sponsored NAIA Sun Conference.

Point will be joined by Edward Waters College out of Jacksonville, Fla. to join the founding four members of the conference which previously consisted of Webber International University, Warner University, Ave Maria University and Southeastern University.

By joining The Sun Conference, Point can now qualify for NAIA post-season play based on its season rankings. The conference will add a Rater position that is responsible for ranking NAIA teams on a weekly basis.

"Football is a significant sport of interest in the Southeast, and we are thrilled to offer Football as a sponsored sport," Sun Conference Commissioner Mark Pope said. "In addition to the possibility of post-season play and the addition of a Rater, our student-athletes will now compete for All-Conference honors."

"Adding Football continues our primary goal of providing a great competitive and educational experience for our student-athletes."

This is a very exciting time for Point football," said athletic director Alan Wilson. "To join five other like-minded schools and become a charter member of the Sun Conference in football is a great opportunity for us as we team up with those schools to form a very competitive football conference. This will also give our athletes an opportunity to compete for the ultimate goal, a National Championship. President Collins, our Board of Trustees, and our administration have all been extremely supportive of our football program from its inception and this is just the next step in us being able to grow our program and instill character and values into the lives of our student athletes."

Football is the 16th sport sponsored by The Sun. Other sponsored sports include baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, men's and women's golf, men's and women's soccer, softball, men's and women's tennis, men's and women's track and field and women's volleyball.
