Point Takes Down No. 25 Southeastern 66-34
VALLEY Ala.- For the second consecutive week the Point University football team took down a nationally ranked opponent. In front of a packed out Homecoming crowd Saturday afternoon in Rams Stadium, the Skyhawks defeated No. 25 Southeastern University 66-34.
Last week Point earned its first victory in program history over a nationally ranked opponent when they defeated No. 23 Webber International 24-21, and the Skyhawks did it again this week with the win over No. 25 Southeastern.
With the win, the Skyhawks (7-2, 4-0 TSC) remain undefeated in conference play and move into sole possession of first place in the The Sun Conference standings. Point is also now guaranteed at least a share of the The Sun Conference Championship title, and can clinch the title outright with a win over Ave Marie on Nov. 7.
Point found the end zone first today, as Charles Fortis rushed five yards on the quarterback keeper for the touchdown, seven minutes into game. Southeastern (4-2, 3-1 TSC) responded with two touchdowns in a two-minute span late in the first quarter to take a 14-7 lead heading into the second period.
Point began to seize control of the game in the second quarter, scoring twice while holding the Fire scoreless. Ladarrius Mathis evened the score for the Skyhawks with 6:13 to play in the second quarter, running it in from two yards out. Three minutes later Charles Fortis found Charles Ducksworth for a 17 yard score to give the Skyhawks a 21-14 lead.
After a tight, back-and-forth first half, the Skyhawks busted the game wide open in the third quarter, scoring a whopping 42 points in the period.
A Fortis to Mathis 68 yard touchdown just a minute and half into the half got things started for the Skyhawks. Thirty seconds later Jed Nwankwah scooped up a Southeastern fumble and returned it 30 yards for another Point touchdown, putting the Skyhawks up 35-14.
The Skyhawks continued to pour it on as Fortis threw to Brandon Robertson for a 48 yard touchdown and Rashad Louie scored a 17 yard rushing touchdown after a Cory Pierce interception gave possession back to Point. Raquan Rush then scored on a 34 yard scamper after recovering another Southeastern fumble and Ducksworth found the end zone once again, this time on a 71 yard reception.
Nick Powell nailed a 31 yard field goal early in the fourth quarter to wrap up the scoring for the Skyhawks.
Fortis finished the game with 363 passing yards and four touchdowns, both career highs, while completing 20 of 34 passes. Ducksworth collected seven receptions and 145 receiving yards.
John Thompson led the defense with seven tackles, including one sack, while Dwyane Fields totaled six tackles and one interception. The Skyhawks forced five Fire turnovers while holding Southeastern to a 25% third down conversion rate.
The 66 points scored by the Skyhawks is the highest point total in a single game in the team's four year history.
