Skyhawks Release 2016 Football Schedule
WEST POINT, Ga. - The Point University football team released its 2016 schedule Friday morning. The Skyhawks are set to play nine games this season along with two exhibitions while competing in the Sun Conference of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).
The 2016 slate features two home games and seven road dates. The Skyhawks' two home games will be played at Ram Stadium in Valley, Ala. Point will also play an exhibition game versus Virginia University of Lynchburg in West Point at River Bowl Stadium and an exhibition versus Middle Georgia State University at Ram Stadium.
This year's schedule features five contests versus Sun Conference foes and one other NAIA opponent. Point also faces two NCAA Division II schools and one NCAA Division I FCS opponent.
Point will open the season with three games on the road, beginning at Reinhardt University (Ga.) - ranked No. 10 in the NAIA Spring Top 25 Poll - on Aug. 27, followed by bouts at NCAA Division II Mississippi College on Sept. 3 and NCAA Division I Kennesaw State University (Ga.) on Sept. 10.
The Skyhawks return to West Point for an exhibition contest versus Lynchburg on Sept. 17 before hitting the road once again for their first Sun Conference game of the 2016 season, versus Edward Waters (Fla.) on Sept. 24.
Next week's game features the first contest of the season at Ram Stadium in Valley, Ala. as the Skyhawks host conference foe Warner University (Fla.). Point remains at home the following two weeks, playing host to Middle Georgia in an exhibition on Oct. 8 and Sun Confernece opponent Webber International (Fla.) on Oct. 15 for Homecoming weekend.
Next up, the Skyhawks travel to Lakeland, Fla. on Oct. 22 for another conference matchup, this time against Southeastern University (Fla.). Following an open week, Point will be right back in Florida for its final Sun Conference game of the 2016 slate, taking on Ave Maria University (Fla.) on Nov. 5. The Skyhawks finish the regular season on the road at NCAA Division II Benedict College (S.C.) on Nov. 12.
Seven of the Skyhawks 2016 opponents will be familiar foes while the remaining four will be first-time opponents. Point won games versus Edward Waters, Warner, Webber, Southeastern and Ave Maria last season while falling to both Reinhardt and Kennesaw State.
The Skyhawks finished the 2015 season with a 9-3 mark, claiming the Sun Conference title and earning a trip to the NAIA Football Championship Series for the first time in school history. Point received a No. 19 ranking in the NAIA Spring Top 25 Poll.
