Football: St. Andrews Spoils Homecoming, Defeats Point, 46-19

VALLEY, Ala. – The St. Andrews University Knights (2-5; 1-2 MSC Appalachian) totaled 379 yards of offense enroute to defeating the host Point University Skyhawks (2-6; 1-3 MSC Appalachian) as they celebrated their 80th-year homecoming, 46-19 in Saturday, Oct. 21 Mid-South Conference divisional football action inside Ram Stadium in Valley, Ala.

SAU wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, grabbing a 7-0 lead with a touchdown coming with 8:03 left in the first quarter, and after scoring two more unanswered touchdowns, the Knights led the Skyhawks 21-0 with 8:23 left in the second quarter.

Point earned its first points late in the second quarter on a quarterback keeper by Derek Bellard (JR/Lake Charles, LA), but SAU blocked the low line-line drive extra-point attempt by junior place kicker Thristen Jackson (Temple, GA) and returned it for a defensive extra point, allowing them to take a 23-6 lead into halftime.

The Skyhawks received the second-half kickoff and cut into the SAU advantage on their first drive when Bellard connected with senior wide-receiver Charles Ducksworth (Mt. Olive, MS) for a 43-yard touchdown score, and with 13:03 left in the third quarter the Skyhawks trailed, 23-13. With the touchdown reception, Ducksworth became Point's all-time pass receptions leader and now holds all-time records for pass receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns.

Despite the Skyhawks' best efforts to rally in the second half, the Knights would add to their lead with two third-quarter touchdowns, and after recording their second defensive extra point of the contest, a returned fumble on a Point two-point conversion attempt after a rushing touchdown by Bellard, SAU led Point by 20 points with 1:55 left in the third quarter, 39-19.

The Knights would score one final touchdown with 9:34 remaining in the game and would go on to spoil Point's homecoming celebration with a victory, 46-19.

Bellard completed nine of his 21 passing attempts for 100 yards and one touchdown and also rushed for 40 yards and two touchdowns, threw one interception and was sacked three times. Sophomore running back MarQuez Jackson (Lawrenceville, GA) had nine carries for 43 yards, Ducksworth caught five passes for 88 yards and one touchdown, and sophomore receiver Chase Turner (Lawrenceville, GA) caught two passes for 10 yards.

Senior linebacker Isaiah Ross (Dallas, GA) finished with a team-high nine total tackles, one for a loss and also forced one fumble. Senior linebacker K.J. Minniefield (Spanish Fort, AL) added seven total tackles, two for a loss with one sack, and freshman linebacker Kameron Weems (Griffin, GA) also recorded seven total tackles.
