Football: Point Suffers 52-19 Divisional Loss at Cumberlands
WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – The Point University Skyhawks (3-7; 1-4 MSC Appalachian) totaled just 169 yards of offense in a 52-19 loss to the University of the Cumberlands Patriots (6-4; 3-3 MSC Appalachian) in Saturday, Nov. 4 Mid-South Conference football action inside James H. Taylor II Stadium in Williamsburg, Ky.
The Patriots scored on their opening possession, but Point answered back on its first possession of the contest, a 51-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Derek Bellard (Lake Charles, LA) to sophomore wide receiver Tyrell Warren (Pleasant Grove, AL), tying the game at 7-7 with 11:22 left in the first quarter.
Cumberlands added a touchdown on its next possession to take a 14-7 lead, but the Skyhawks cut the Patriot lead to just one point after returning a blocked field-goal attempt for a touchdown early in the second quarter, but after the extra-point attempt was blocked, Point trailed, 14-13 with 14:42 remaining inn the second quarter.
The Patriots would go on to add four more touchdowns during the remainder of the first half, outscoring Point, 28-6 to take a 42-19 advantage into halftime. Cumberlands shutout the Skyhawks in the second half, adding one field goal and one touchdown on its way to defeating Point, 52-19.
Bellard completed seven of his 23 passing attempts for 102 yards and one touchdown, threw two interceptions and was sacked three times. Freshman running back Conner Williams (Franklin County, GA) had 12 carries for 35 yards and one touchdown and Warren hauled in three passes for 76 yards and one touchdown.
Junior linebacker Kadaymen Johnson (Jackson, MS) led the Skyhawks with eight tackles and sophomore linebacker Jason Gartrell (Lincolnton, GA), sophomore safety Micah Oglesby (Toccoa, GA), and senior linebacker K.J. Minniefield (Spanish Fort, AL) each made seven tackles, with Oglesby also blocking a field goal.
Freshman defensive end Braxton McCallum (Woodstock, GA) made six tackles and recorded a sack, senior linebacker Isaiah Ross (Dallas, GA) also added six tackles, and junior defensive end Kreg Jenkins (Lithia Springs, GA) made four tackles and teamed up with sophomore defensive lineman Joseph Jordan (Atlanta, GA) to record a sack.
