Point's McFarland Named Conference Defensive Player of Week

WEST POINT, Ga. – Point University's senior safety Isaiah McFarland (Ellenwood, GA) was named Mid-South Conference Appalachian Division Football Defensive Player of the Week for Sept. 17. He joins Offensive Player of the Week, running back Milton Shelton from the University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) and Special Teams Player of the Week, Nick Marquez from Reinhardt University as MSC Appalachian Division Players of the Week. McFarland earned his first Player of the Week honor of the season and of his career.

McFarland made five total tackles, four solos and two for losses, and intercepted three passes in Point's 28-24 win over Kentucky Christian. He set a new single-game record with this three picks and totaled 72 return yards against Kentucky Christian during Point's Homecoming game, Sept. 15. McFarland ranks first in the Mid-South Conference and is tied for third in the NAIA with his three interceptions.

McFarland led a Skyhawk secondary that limited Kentucky Christian to 167 passing yards on 37 attempts and intercepted five passes, which tied another school single-game record. With Point leading 28-10 with 29 seconds left in the first half, McFarland intercepted KCU's Jug Smith and returned the ball 6 yards to the KCU 49, preserving Point's lead through the intermission. McFarland picked off Smith again on the first play of the third quarter and returned the ball 18 yards to the KCU 33 and intercepted Smith for a third time with 1:57 left in the third quarter at the Point 43 and returned the ball to the KCU 10.
