All-Mid-South Conference Appalachian Football Teams Announced

COLUMBIA, Ky. – The 2018 All Mid-South Conference Appalachian Division teams and individual award winners have been announced by conference officials.

The individual awards and all-conference teams are selected by a vote of the MSC Appalachian Division coaches. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own players. Thirty players earned first team All-Conference honors and 26 were selected to the All-Conference second team. Ties for the All-Conference teams were not broken.

Point placed two defensive players, sophomore linebacker Kameron Weems (Griffin, GA) and sophomore free safety Isaiah McFarland (Ellenwood, GA), on the All-MSC Appalachian first team and four players on the All-MSC Appalachian second team, including redshirt freshman running back Melvin Smalls, Jr. (Savannah, GA); freshman defensive tackle Warren Breakfield (Albany, GA) and senior defensive end Kreg Jenkins (Lithia Springs, GA); and junior cornerback Kendall Hillman (Jonesboro, GA).

In addition, Smalls, Jr. was named MSC Appalachian Division Offensive Freshman of the Year and Breakfield received Defensive Freshman of the Year honors. Other special award winners include running back Milton Shelton from University of the Cumberlands (Ky.), who received the Craig Mullins MSC Appalachian Offensive Player of the Year Award, and defensive lineman J.T. Graydon from Reinhardt University (Ga.), who won the MSC Appalachian Defensive Player of the Year Award. Reinhardt's head coach James Miller is the 2018 Ron Finley Appalachian Division Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season after leading the number four-ranked Eagles to another divisional title and into the NAIA playoffs.

Shelton was the top rusher in the MSC and finished the year with 1,263 yards and 16 touchdowns to lead the conference. Graydon was a force on Reinhardt's defensive line, registering 14 sacks and 16 tackles for loss for the season. He totaled 35 tackles and forced three fumbles and helped Reinhardt lead the NAIA in opposing third down conversion percentage (19.7%) and third in the NAIA with 43.5 sacks.

Smalls, Jr. rushed for 625 yards and two touchdowns in his first year and averaged 62.5 yards per game and five yards per carry for the Skyhawks. He had a long run of 69 yards and added eight receptions out of the backfield. Breakfield made 27 tackles from his defensive line position as a freshman and registered seven tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks for the Skyhawks. Breakfield broke out during divisional play, making 21 of his tackles in the final six games.

McFarland, a three-time MSC Appalachian Division Defensive Player of the Week this season, led Point with 59 tackles, 43 solo tackles, six pass deflections and four forced fumbles and ranked third in the NAIA with seven interceptions, a school record. He also made 4.5 tackles for 64 yards of losses. He had a school-record three interceptions in Point's 28-24 Homecoming win over Kentucky Christian, Sept. 15.

Weems, a starter in seven games, ranked second on the team with 56 tackles and 32 solo tackles and had 1.5 sacks and five other tackles for losses, broke up one pass and recovered one fumble. Jenkins ranked 12th in the NAIA with nine sacks and totaled 40 tackles with 27 solos and 12 total tackles for 53 yards in losses and recovered one fumble. Hillman totaled 24 tackles, 4.5 tackles for losses, one interception and five pass deflections.
