Football drops season finale at St. Andrews
LAURINBURG, N.C. (April 10, 2021) – The Point University football team traveled to play St. Andrews University in its final game of the spring season Saturday afternoon and fell to the Knights 62-20.
Play-by-play
Both teams played an even first quarter, with the Knights getting on the board first with a touchdown before Point closed the quarter with a touchdown in the final seconds. Hunter Hardin carried the ball for two yards into the endzone to even the score 7-7 following Logan Flesher's PAT.
St. Andrews dominated on offense in the second quarter, scoring four touchdowns, while the Skyhawks only scored one. Point's second-quarter touchdown came from a 30-yard pass to Timothy Gary from Keenan Wise with 3:27 left in the half. The Knights entered the break leading 35-14.
The Knights' strong offensive performance carried over to the third quarter, as SAU scored two touchdowns back-to-back before a Skyhawk fumble allowed the Knights to score their third touchdown of the quarter. Je'Marcus Snow blocked the Knights' PAT attempt following their third touchdown, and the Skyhawks trailed 55-14 entering the fourth quarter.
Point opened the fourth quarter with a touchdown from Sensir Carnes but could not connect for the PAT. In the following possession, St. Andrews scored their ninth touchdown of the day to extend its lead out 62-20 to end the game.
Game leaders
On the ground, Tyrique Robinson and Sensir Carnes led the Skyhawks, with Robinson accounting for 67 yards and Carnes recording 43. Gary and Tucker Marsh each received three passes, with Gary leading the way with 41 yards and one touchdown.
Chase Turner led Point's defensive efforts with 11 total tackles and an interception. Treyvon Pope followed with six solo tackles and an interception that he returned for 24 yards. Five Skyhawks had tackles for loss, with Connor Romo and Ryan Massey leading the way, each with one tackle for five and four yards, respectively.
With the conclusion of Saturday's game, Point finishes the season 1-7 and 1-5 in Mid-South Conference Appalachian Division play. The Skyhawks will return to action in the fall, with their first game scheduled for Sept. 4.
