Point Football surges past Kentucky Christian in the AAC Opener

VALLEY, Ala. (Oct. 5, 2024) - The Point University Football team returned to the Ram Stadium for an afternoon Appalachian Athletic Conference matchup against Kentucky Christian where the Skyhawks took the win with a final score of 30-22. 

Jakari Nobles set the tone for the Skyhawks with a game-opening interception to force the first turnover of the afternoon. The offense took the field with Mitchell Gossett scrambled for an 18-yard gain. As the offense looked to build, Gossett followed with a quick pass to Quintravious Teasley which turned into a 36-yard touchdown. Logan Wandzilak brought the lead to 7-0 with a Field Goal for the extra point. Kentucky Christian looked to regain composure with quick passes to creep into Skyhawk territory to threaten a score but the Skyhawks' defense finished the drive with a tackle for no gain from Gabriel Donnelly followed by Caleb Wade flying in for the deflection. Point's offense looked to add another scoring drive with Shawn Jones Jr. Adding two big catches to get into the red zone. A fumble on the goal line would be enough to give the ball back to the Knights towards the end of the first period. The offense opened the second quarter with Mitchell Gossett connecting with a 16-yard touchdown pass to TJ Howell. A failed extra-point attempt kept Point's lead to 13-0. Point's defense was able to collect another three-and-out as Logan Slagle added a crucial tackle for loss to keep Point's momentum going. The Knights were able to create a defensive stop and add a scoring drive on the offensive end with a 20-yard scramble. The Skyhawks were able to return the favor on Offense with big plays to Payton Allen with a 15-yard catch and a 25-yard rush by Ja'Vin Jones. Mitchell Gossett finished the drive with his second passing touchdown with a four-yard connection to Nicholas Marien. The Knights were able to go into the half with a 19-yard passing touchdown to trail 20-14.  

The third quarter looked to add some interest as the Skyhawks looked to get going with Logan Wandzilak adding a 32-yard field goal to increase Point's lead to 23-14. As Kentucky Christian looked to get back on track, Kemorion Larkin jumped a pass to take it to the house for a 15-yard pick-six to increase Point's lead to 30-14. With the Skyhawks holding the Knights scoreless in the third, Point looked to go into the final period with a full head of steam. Kentucky Christian did not go away easily in the fourth as the Knights added another score in the air. The Knights were able to follow with a two-point conversion to add some hope. The Skyhawks were able to hold off the Knights with Mitchell Gossett adding the finishing touches to take the win in AAC Play. 

In the Box 

Mitchell Gossett added 266 passing yards while throwing 20-for-29 and followed with 58 yards on seven attempts. Ja'Vin Jones followed with five rushes for 37 yards with his longest being 25 yards. In the air, Quintravious Teasley led with five catches for 107 receiving yards and one touchdown. Shawn Jones Jr. Followed with three catches for 54 receiving yards, his longest being 31 yards. TJ Howell added two catches for 26 yards with his first collegiate touchdown. Nicholas Marien also added three catches for 26 yards and one touchdown. Jaylen Williams led with seven tackles and Gunner Sweatt followed with six tackles. Jakari Nobles and Dorien Foots added their first career interceptions while Kemorion Larkin followed with a pick six which was also his first interception.
