Skyhawks Stumble Against Thomas University
THOMASVILLE, Ga. – Nyleigha Knighton ended the shutout on the final play of the game Thursday afternoon, but the Point University Skyhawks dropped a pivotal Sun Conference matchup 47-6 against the Thomas University Night Hawks at the TU Soccer Complex.
The Night Hawks' quarterback Destiny Lockett picked off Corriah Williams on the game's first play and helped her own cause with a 10-yard rushing touchdown two snaps later as Thomas scored first with 10:33 to go. After forcing a turnover on downs, Lockett sent a deep ball to Sabrina Schlegelmilch from midfield to raise the Night Hawks lead to 14, a margin they kept through the rest of the first quarter.
Lockett claimed her second touchdown on the opening play of quarter two, but Keirra Thomas swatted away the conversion to limit the Night Hawks to a 20-0 score. Arie'Yona Christion and Neka Dean added endzone trips for Thomas as the score jumped to 33-0 before the half's end. Thomas scored on each of their possessions during the first two quarters.
Point was able to slow Thomas' production on the offensive side of the ball as the Night Hawks hit the endzone twice in the second half. Dyva Jones got open in the third quarter and Christion legged out her second touchdown in the fourth.
On the game's last play, Corriah Williams sent the ball to Knighton, who took it down the remaining 42 yards on the field to crack the scoreboard at 47-6. That put Knighton's yardage total to a Skyhawks-best 58 at the final buzzer.
It was a reception that capped off Williams with a 16-30 line in pass attempts and 115 yards picked up through the air. Kenzie Phillian brought energy on the defensive unit with two interceptions. She went 36 yards between those two plays and recorded a team-leading four tackles.
The Skyhawks will have one last go at it in the regular season this Saturday, April 11 with their finale at Florida Gateway College. The start time is slated for 1:00pm EDT in Lake City.
