Men’s Basketball falls to Talladega in tight Overtime Battle

WEST POINT, Ga. (Oct. 24, 2024)—The Point University Men's Basketball team opened its 2024 campaign against Talladega College. The Skyhawks fell to the Tornadoes in Overtime with a final score of 77-72. 

The first half opened with Talladega adding a 7-0 run as the Skyhawks looked to get settled. Point halted the run with Vince Graves and Antwon Ferrell adding back-to-back triples to trail by three. The Tornadoes continued to hold their until Point came charging back with Ferrell and Tanner Higgins knocking down back-to-back three-pointers to lead 16-11. Both opponents continued to trade scores with deep shots behind the arc, with Sam Rees entering the fray for a corner three. The Skyhawks continued to move the ball around, with Mike Evans adding a three-pointer, followed by a layup by Antwon Ferrell. The Skyhawks extended their lead to five, with Grant Williams finding his spot in the corner for the triple to lead 30-25. Talladega climbed their way back in the lead with a three-pointer and a layup to lead 35-33 at the half. 

Talladega opened the second half with a layup to extend their lead to four, but the Skyhawks stayed in the fight with Vince Graves adding a triple, followed by Brandon Kincaid powering through the lane for a layup. The Tornadoes looked to make the Skyhawks uncomfortable with tight defense, but Tanner Higgins was one step ahead with a nothing-but-net three-pointer to tie the game at 41. The lead for both teams traded hands, but the Skyhawks were able to take a three-point lead from a Justice Hayes corner three and O'Brien Watkins with a swift layup through the lane. Talladega did not stay out of the loop for long as the triple from the Tornadoes tied the game at 49 with 9:15 left. Antwon Ferrell and Vince Graves put the Skyhawks ahead by five with a mid-range jumper and three-point bomb. The game continued to be a nail-biter, with the Tornadoes going on a 10-0 run to regain the lead with a score of 62-57. Antwon Ferrell went deep in the bag of tricks with a step-back three-pointer to cut into the Talladega lead. As the Tornadoes looked to seal the game with shots made from the charity stripe, a foul in the last 30 seconds allowed Point to score. Antwon Ferrell would make his moment count at the charity stripe to tie the game at 64. A missed three-pointer from Talladega gave the Skyhawks one last chance for a game-winner, but the last shot would barely miss to send the game into overtime. In extra time, the Tornadoes opened with a layup, two free throws, and a dunk to extend the lead to 70-65. Jeremiah Smith used his strength in the paint to add a score to the Skyhawks. Point stayed in the fight with Vince Graves going three-for-three from the charity stripe, but a last-second layup followed by free throws ended the game with Talladega winning 77-72.

Antwon Ferrell led with 27 points, four assists, four rebounds and one steal. Vince Graves followed with 18 Points, four rebounds, two assists, and one steal.
