Point Falls to CIU on Final Day of Cola Classic Round Robin

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Point University softball team ended play at this weekend's Cola Classic Round Robin with a 5-2 loss to tournament co-host Columbia International on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The two sides were scoreless until Columbia International broke through with a run in the top of the fourth inning.

  • Point responded in the bottom half of the inning with a run of its own on a sacrifice fly from sophomore MaKenzie Gilliland that evened the score at 1-1.

  • The Rams retook the lead with a two-run fifth inning before Point cut the deficit in half with another sacrifice fly in the sixth. Sophomore Sarah Hinely recorded the RBI with a deep fly out to left field, bringing freshman Anna McMahan home from third.

  • Columbia International added two more insurance runs in the seventh as PU went down in order in the bottom half of the frame to end the game.

NOTES

  • Freshman Aubryn Sward was 2-for-3 in the game, while McMahan finished 1-for-3 with a double and two runs scored.

  • In the circle, junior Alyssa Burrows got the start and allowed three runs (none earned) on five hits across four innings.

The Skyhawks host Kentucky Christian next Friday, Feb. 20, for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. from West Point Park Softball Field
