Point Skyhawks Outlast United States Sports University in Doubleheader
WEST POINT, Ga. – The Point University Skyhawks softball team has now won five of its first eight games of the 2026 season after fending off the United States Sports University Eagles with wins of 6-5 and 3-1 on Thursday at West Point City Park.
Game One:
A late-inning swing from Alexa McCoy turned a back-and-forth game into a dramatic home win, as Point rallied for a 6-5 victory.
Trailing 5-3 at the bottom of the sixth, the Skyhawks seized control when McCoy drove a three-run home run to left field, flipping the score to 6-5. The blast capped a four-lead-change contest and stood as the decisive blow after Point's defense recorded the final three outs in the seventh to close out the one-run win.
McCoy finished 1-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored, delivering in Point's second big inning of the day. Earlier, in the bottom of the first, Aubryn Sward put the Skyhawks on top with a bases-clearing double to left. Sward's three-run double erased an early 1-0 deficit and gave Point a 3-1 lead after United States Sports University had struck first in the top half of the inning.
Point's offense proved more efficient, turning seven hits into six runs while stranding just four. The Skyhawks collected two doubles, one triple and McCoy's decisive home run, and matched the Eagles with error-free defense. Both teams showed discipline at the plate as well, with United States Sports University drawing six walks and Point working three free passes.
Game Two:
A complete-game effort from Alyssa Burrows and a pair of early extra-base hits powered Point to a 3-1 win over United States Sports University in the second game of the twin bill.
The Skyhawks did all of their scoring in the first two innings and made it stand behind Burrows' steady work in the circle. Point struck first in the opening frame without the benefit of a hit. Leadoff batter Chelsey Hogsed drew a walk and moved station to station on a pair of wild pitches, setting up Anna McMahan, who lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to plate Hogsed for a 1-0 advantage.
Point added what proved to be the decisive runs in the second. MaKenzie Gilliland reached and later came around to score on a double to left by Alexa McCoy, who drove the ball into the gap to push the lead to 2-0. Moments later, Hogsed ripped a double to left, and an error by the left fielder allowed another run to cross, stretching the margin to 3-0. McCoy finished with a double, an RBI and a run scored, while Hogsed went 1-for-2 with a double, a walk, a run and an RBI to spark the Skyhawks' offense.
Burrows went the distance, tossing 7.0 innings and limiting the Eagles to three hits and one unearned run. The right-hander worked around three walks and recorded one strikeout, needing 87 pitches to secure the complete-game victory. Point's defense stranded six United States Sports University runners, backing Burrows in key spots to preserve the two-run lead.
The Skyhawks see a quick turnaround with two more games happening tomorrow, February 20 when Kentucky Christian University comes to town. The action begins at 1:00pm at West Point City Park.
