Skyhawks Finish Tough Weekend at William Carey
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Point University Skyhawks weekend road series concluded on a sour note on Saturday afternoon after they were shut out 4-0 and 11-0 by the William Carey University Crusaders at Fail Field.
Game One:
Chelsey Hogsed had a two-hit game, consisting of a bunt single in the second inning and a base hit in the seventh. Besides an Alexa McCoy one-bagger of her own, that was all the Skyhawks offense could muster in the twin bill opener.
Point stuck with Chloe Mitcham in the circle for their six innings in the field. William Carey accumulated six hits and four runs off her. The Crusaders scored three runs in the second inning on a Jayden Sawyer home run to left center field and added to their advantage in the fourth when Anna Grace Shows batted in Brooklyn Montana.
Sawyer benefited William Carey on both sides of the ball, serving as their pitcher and striking out seven Skyhawks at the plate through five innings to earn the win. Her record is now 11-2.
Game Two:
William Carey pitcher Reanna Neiman stumped the Skyhawks batting order with one hit given up when Laura Fendley batted a pitch to the circle for a third-inning single. Point showed promise early with an Alexa McCoy walk and Anna McMahan reaching on a fielders' choice in the first, but a double play wiped out any opportunities the Skyhawks had. The Crusaders did all of their damage in the first half of the action with a run in the first inning, four in the second and six in the third before the game concluded after five full.
McCoy, Sarah Hinely and Abigail Todd each got on base. Skyhawks pitching split the game between four players: Kendall Holbrook, Olivia Daughtrey, Avery Lee and Raley Thorn.
For the first time in over a month, Point will be playing home softball for their doubleheader on Friday, March 27. Blue Mountain Christian University will take a trip to West Point Park for games at 1:00 and 3:00pm EDT.
