Women’s Basketball makes a Clean Sweep for Player of the Week Awards

WEST POINT, Ga. (Nov. 4, 2024) - The Southern States Athletic Conference announced Women's Basketball Player of the Week awards where the Women's Basketball program made a clean sweep with Zaria Johnson earning Defensive Player of the Week and Shakira Wilson earning Offensive Player of the Week.

SSAC Defensive Player of the Week: Zaria Johnson

The Junior from Montgomery, Alabama opened her Skyhawk career, opening the season with 21 Points, 17 Rebounds, and seven blocks in a winning effort against Brenau University. Johnson credited Head Coach Alexis Tate for her stepping up and making her presence known in the home debut on the boards and defensively. Johnson continued her effort where she added 12 Points, 13 Rebounds, and two blocks in the game against Reinhardt. Zaria Johnson is a player that looks to be a major piece to this new identity for Point Women's Basketball and has started her career at Point in an impressive outing. Johnson currently leads the team with 14.5 rebounds and 4.5 Blocks through the first two games. This is her first weekly honor of the season.

SSAC Offensive Player of the Week: Shakira Wilson

The Senior from Meridian, Mississippi averaged 21.5 Points per game this past week where she added 14 Points in the win against Brenau University while shooting 4-12 overall and 3-8 from behind the arc. Wilson followed with being the leading scorer in a nail-biter against Reinhardt University where she added 28 Points, nine rebounds, and one assist. Wilson shot 8-for-22 overall and 5-for-11 from behind the arc. Shakira Wilson is one of four returners on this team who has been in big moments and is not afraid to let it fly. Wilson looks to continue her consistent play on the offensive end as the Women's Basketball team prepares for SSAC Play. Wilson enters her Senior Year averaging 21.0 Points per game and now can add a weekly honor to her resume.
