Skyhawks Fall Saturday Afternoon

WEST POINT - - Visiting Tennessee Southern outscored host Point 23-4 in the opening quarter to claim a 79-40 women's basketball win Saturday afternoon. Three Firewhawks registered double-figure scoring in the win, led by Marypaz Martinez who netted 12 to lead a group of 12 Tennessee Southern players who found the scoring column.

Turnovers played a key role in the game as the Skyhawks turned it over 31 times in the loss. The extra possessions led to 28 points for the Firehawks who also limited the hosts to 32.7 percent shooting.

Phallan Thomas finished 6-of-11 from the field en route to a game-high 14 points in the loss. The guard made a pair of 3-pointers but as a team Point hit on just 4-of-14 attempts from distance.

Tennessee Southern turned the ball over only eight times and assisted on 22 of 30 field goals. Lauren Smith and Ramie Reid each posted 11 points in the win while 11-of-12 players who saw action scored.

Azzia Flowers turned in a strong rebounding game by leading all players with nine in defeat. It was part of a rebounding performance that saw the Skyhawks win the battle of the boards 40-to-37.

Point will have a quick turnaround as the team entertains Blue Mountain Christian Monday. Tip time is slated for 5:30 p.m.
