Skyhawks suffer sweep to CIU

WEST POINT, Ga. (Sept. 24, 2021) – The Point University volleyball team hosted Columbia International University Friday night in an Appalachian Athletic Conference matchup and fell to the Rams in three straight sets, 25-20, 26-24, 25-18.

With Friday night's loss, the Skyhawk's record falls to 5-8 (2-3 AAC).

Despite the match sweep, Point played each set close, coming down to the final points to determine a set winner. The Rams jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening set before the Skyhawks answered with a 4-1 run to tie the set 4-4. CIU would retake the lead, followed by a kill by Te'a Owens to tie the set again, but a kill from the Rams' Kira Rymer would help CIU take the lead, where they would stay for the rest of the set.

In the second set, the Rams held the lead up until an ace from Kaitlyn Hawke helped Point earn their first lead of the night. This would be the Skyhawks' only lead of the set, as back-to-back kills by Gabriela Vega would give CIU the lead 14-13. Point would tie the set three more times and send it past regulation ending with a kill from Sarah Baucham, but the Rams scored the final two points to take a 2-0 match lead.

Point looked to avoid the sweep as they opened the third set on a 3-1 run and followed with a 5-0 run to lead 10-7, but the Rams answered with their own run, scoring six of the following seven points to take a 13-11 lead. The Skyhawks would battle back and go ahead 18-17 from a kill by Brooke McCarty, but that was all of the points they would score, as CIU closed the third set out by scoring seven unanswered points to retake the lead and win the match.

Baucham led Point's offense with seven kills, followed by Owens and Mollie Goen, who recorded six kills apiece. Owens led Point's defense with nine digs, followed by Whitney Ward, who recorded seven. Abby Solomon and Hawke anchored Point's offense, finishing with 12 and 11 assists, respectively.

Point will look to bounce back tomorrow, Sept. 25, as the Skyhawks host Columbia College in another AAC matchup, inside West Point Park Gymnasium at 1 p.m.
