Volleyball sweeps TWU at home

WEST POINT, Ga. (Oct. 2, 2021) – Double-digit days from Te'a Owens, Kaitlyn Hawke and Whitney Ward helped the Point University volleyball team to an easy win over Appalachian Athletic Conference member Tennessee Wesleyan Saturday morning in West Point Park Gymnasium. The Skyhawks won in three sets (25-14, 25-20, 25-17) and improved their record to 8-9 (5-4 AAC).

Owens led Point's offense with 12 kills, finishing with a .249 kill percentage. Hawke recorded 17 assists to help anchor Point's offense and Ward led the Skyhawks' defense with 11 digs.

The Skyhawks used a strong opening set to gain momentum to carry into the following sets to earn the sweep. Point recorded 36 kills across three sets and finished the day with a .256 hitting percentage.

Tennessee Wesleyan's only lead of the day came in the second set, with a 6-1 run fueled by five kills and a service ace to put the Bulldogs ahead 10-9. A Skyhawk error followed by another Bulldog kill extended TWU's lead out 13-10, but Point went on a 4-0 run to take a one-point advantage 14-13. Both teams were back-and-forth with four ties and four lead changes in the next rallies, but a kill from Owens gave Point the momentum they needed to close the set out on a 5-1 run.

Up next, Point hosts in-state rival Brenau University on Tuesday, Oct. 5, at 6:30 p.m.
