Point sweeps St. Andrews at home
WEST POINT, Ga. (Oct. 26, 2021) – The Point University volleyball team hosted Appalachian Athletic Conference foe, St. Andrews, Tuesday evening and defeated the Knights in straight sets 25-18, 25-22, 25-15.
With the win, the Skyhawks are now 12-13 (9-8 AAC), while the Knights fall to 9-22 (8-9 AAC).
Set-by-set
Point opened the match up with all the momentum, jumping ahead 10-1. Six of the Skyhawks' points came off SAU errors. The Knights would cut down on Point's lead and bring the score back within three (13-10) off a 5-1 run, but that was as close as St. Andrews would get as Point was able to extend their lead once again, beginning with a kill from Mollie Goen and followed by back-to-back SAU errors to extend Point's lead back out to six (16-10). Point led by no less than five points for the remainder of the opening set.
In the second set, St. Andrews opened on a 3-0 run, but Point was able to answer with kills from Whitney Ward and Sarah Baucham, followed by an error from SAU to tie the set 3-3. The Skyhawks would follow with a 5-1 run to lead by four (8-4), but St. Andrews would battle back, scoring the following four points to tie the set 8-8. Point never allowed the Knights to take the lead, but St. Andrews went on to tie the set three more times. St. Andrews kept the score close, trailing by one with the score 21-20, but back-to-back kills from McCarty and Goen would give Point enough distance to earn the second set victory.
Leading the match 2-0, Point opened the third set similar to the first, taking an early 11-2 lead. Point extended its lead out 19-4 before St. Andrews went on an 8-1 run to bring Point's lead back within single digits, but the Knights' late-game surge was not enough for a comeback and Point went on to secure the match victory.
