Point Volleyball falls to the Running Eagles in an epic five-setter
WEST POINT, Ga. (Sept. 21, 2024) - The Point University Volleyball team returned to the court for an afternoon Southern States Athletic Conference match against Life University where the Skyhawks fell to the Running Eagles in five sets.
Set One (25-17, Win)
The Skyhawks went on an early run in the first set to put the Running Eagles on their heels with a score of 8-4. Errors from Life University and kills from Claire Cordell helped extend the lead to 14-7. Point continued to bring the energy in set one by not giving an inch while adding service aces and kills to take set one with a final score of 25-17.
Set Two (26-24, Win)
Both opponents entered the second set on a quick pace as the Running Eagles jumped ahead with a 7-3 lead. Point returned the favor with offensive firepower from Claire Cordell and capitalizing off multiple errors from Life University. As the Running Eagles looked to climb back and regain the lead, Kayla Johnson and Tianna Kynard woke up the gym with multiple kills to bring the score to 19-18. The Running Eagles looked to find their stride by going on a 6-0 run with hopes of finishing the set. Two service aces from Lexi Arter kills from Kayla Johnson and Claire Cordell, and errors from Life University flipped the momentum to give the Skyhawks a win in set two.
Set Three (25-13, Loss)
The Running Eagles were determined to slow the Skyhawks down and add momentum to their side. The efforts displayed as Life built their lead to a score of 20-9 through the set. The Skyhawks looked to build a comeback with an error from Life and a service ace from Emily Calhoun. The Running Eagles held the Skyhawks to 13 points in set three and advanced the match to four.
Set Four (25-22, Loss)
Both opponents took the court by adding back-to-back scores through the first 14 points. Life took the lead from two kills and an attack error from the Skyhawks. As the Running Eagles continued to build their lead, Claire Cordell and Angel Johnson followed with multiple kills to cut into the Life University lead with a score of 22-20. The Running Eagles held their lead and brought the match to a fifth set.
Set Five (18-16, Loss)
Life jumped in front with a 4-0 lead, hoping to make quick work of the Skyhawks. Angel Johnson and Abigail Hardwick followed with consecutive kills to cut into the Running Eagles' lead with a 5-4 score. Hardwick continued to add a spark on the court with another kill on the offensive end which was followed by an assisted block on the defensive end from Angel Johnson and Ava Clay. As the Running Eagles regained composure, two errors and a kill from Angel Johnson helped the Skyhawks regain the lead with a score of 13-11. Point looked to finish the set with multiple kills from Abigail Hardwick and Claire Cordell but an error and two kills helped complete the comeback and win in five sets.
In the Box
Claire Cordell led with 14 kills and added eight digs. Kayla Johnson followed with 10 kills, two digs, and one block. Defensively, Jordan Palmer led with 16 digs. Paige Lowe led with 25 assists and Emily Calhoun followed with 23 Assists.
