Interceptions Prove to Be Too Costly in Skyhawks 24-18 Loss to St. Thomas
WEST POINT, Ga. – It was a strong beginning and a late effort by the Point University Skyhawks on Friday afternoon, but what happened between then was the difference maker in their 24-18 loss at the hands of the St. Thomas University Bobcats. St. Thomas intercepted Corriah Williams five times and Nyleigha Knighton once to escape River Bowl Stadium with the narrow win.
The first quarter's sole touchdown came on a 19-yard rip from Corriah Williams to Leah Prather for a 6-0 Skyhawks lead. The Bobcats attempted to counter moments later, working the ball deep into Point's end where a clutch Kenzie Phillian interception took place at the goal line.
Phillian picked off yet another pass in the second quarter, but that's where St. Thomas found their footing and the lead with Lia Cruz (2) and Alex Harris taking the ball to the house for 18 straight Bobcat points. Cruz scored on one pass and a rush, and the St. Thomas streak was stretched between 12 points in the second quarter and six in the third.
Point played their best ball in the final quarter with Aniyah Wesley and Corriah Williams each putting up six points, but a touchdown run from the Bobcats' Sherice Newton was the blow that made the Skyhawks' run come up just shy.
Phillian's interception total was three and Amara Davila gave the Skyhawks a fourth to keep St. Thomas from running away with the score. Phillian, Zykierria Williams and Keirra Thomas tied each other for most tackles in the game for Point with five apiece.
Even with Williams' tough outing in the quarterback position, Corriah picked up 233 yards in passing and recorded 27 successful receptions.
With the outcome, the Skyhawks put a three-game week in the rear-view mirror that places them at 5-6 and 2-4 in the SUN Conference. Their next date on the schedule is Saturday, March 28 when Brewton Parker College welcomes them to Mount Vernon, Georgia for a game at 10am.
