Skyhawks Come Up Short at Loyola
NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Point University men's basketball team finished with five players in double-digits in scoring, but it was not enough as the Skyhawks were edged out 90-83 in conference action by Loyola University New Orleans tonight. The Skyhawks are now 6-10 and 2-8 on the year, while the Wolf Pack is 14-4 and 6-2 in the conference.
Point wasted no time as it opened the game on a 10-3 run, before the Wolf Pack worked their way back into the game to trail 13-10 off a 7-3 run. Loyola used a three-pointer and a jump shot to grab its first lead of the contest at 15-13 with 11:27 to go. Both teams traded baskets for the next seven minutes with Point clinging to a 27-26 lead. The Skyhawks and Wolf Pack stayed close for the remainder of the half, with Point taking a 40-35 lead into the locker room at the half.
Loyola scored the first five points to start the second half to tie the game at 40 and later took the lead with a jumper to go up 42-40. The Skyhawks used an 11-5 run to reclaim the lead at 51-47 with 16:02 left in the game. Like the first half, both teams exchanged baskets for most of the half, but the Wolf Pack were able to build a lead to go up 69-63 with under 10 minutes to go. Loyola strung together an 11-2 run to push its lead to 80-65, but Point was able to cut the lead to six with 22 seconds to go. The lead was too much to overcome for Point as the Wolf Pack was able to hold on to secure the victory
Loyola controlled the boards as it grabbed 43 rebounds to the Skyhawks' 32.
Point shot 49.2% from the field, 40% from the arc, and 60% from the line for the contest.
Cahlib Edwards led Point in points with 19, while dishing out a team-high seven assists. He shot 7 of 13 from the field and 4 of 6 from the line.
Robert Harris finished with 16 points of his own, while Yuta Yamamoto, Kenton Steele, and Kaden Paul all tallied 12 points each.
Brandon Kincaid finished with a team-high 13 rebounds (11 defensive, 2 offensive).
Point is back on the road on Saturday and faces conference foe William Carey University at 3 p.m.
