Momentum Goes Against Skyhawks in 12-7 Defeat to Reinhardt
WALESKA, Ga. – The Point University Skyhawks faced a 48-shot attack on Thursday afternoon and couldn't keep pace as the Reinhardt University Eagles claimed victory against them 12-7 at Ken White Field.
After eight minutes of scoreless action, Malyke Sillers weaved through defenders and blasted his shot past Reinhardt goaltender Michael Scoleri for a 1-0 Point lead. Luke Greer answered for the Eagles one minute later, which was followed by Joey Amatulli giving them the 2-1 advantage.
The teams exchanged goals again before the end of the first. Point's Jamison Cross found shooting space and Bennett Morrison scored a buzzer-beater to regain a 3-2 edge for the Eagles.
Reinhardt showed authority in a second quarter where they outscored the Skyhawks 6-2. Shaun McLaughlin along with Zachary Covey hit the twine for Point, but the Eagles were able to separate those with goals of their own as they controlled the score at 9-4 midway through play. Greer sealed his hat trick prior to halftime while Joey Amatulli and Marshall Cisco each stood at two goals.
The tempo shifted in the third quarter with the teams only combining for three strikes. Rodney Oakley had the lone tally for the Skyhawks, and Reinhardt's Shackelford countered with his third and fourth of the day.
Amatulli bumped up the Eagles' lead to 12-5, leading to one last Skyhawks push. That resulted in goals from Cross and Covey, but the Eagles held the score at 12-7 until the final buzzer.
Point put 16 of their 30 shots on goal and were dominated at the face-off X 20-3. The Skyhawks had 15 turnovers compared to Reinhardt's eight. Whitman Prewitt recorded 15 saves in net for Point.
Just one remaining regular season game awaits the Skyhawks, which will see them travel to Tennessee Wesleyan University this Saturday, April 18 for a 2:00pm EDT showdown in the Appalachian Athletic Conference.
