Point Makes it Three in a Row with Win Over Mobile
WEST POINT, Ga. – Kenton Steele's double-double performance guides the Point University men's basketball team to its third straight win with an 88-86 victory over visiting the University of Mobile tonight in conference action. The Skyhawks are 9-11 and 5-9 in the SSAC, while the Rams drop to 7-17 and 7-7.
Point jumped out to a 13-4 lead to start the game, but the Rams used an 8-4 run to close the gap to five to trail 17-12 with 11:37 on the clock. Mobile kept the game close to trail by single digits to cut the lead to 38-36 before taking a 39-38 lead with 1:04 left in the half. Steele responded by draining a jumper with three seconds left to send the Skyhawks into the locker room up 40-39.
Coming out of the half, Point used a 12-2 run to push its lead to 52-41with 16:54 left in the game. Both teams traded baskets for most of the half with the Skyhawks holding a 70-62 edge. The Point lead did not last long as the Rams were able to tie the game at 86 with 47 seconds remaining. Down to the final two seconds, Mobile missed a jumper, and Point's Steele grabbed the defensive rebound before being fouled. Steele put Point back in front after hitting a pair of free throws to make it 88-86, but before time expired, the Rams missed a three-pointer, giving the Skyhawks the win.
The Skyhawks shot 46.2% from the field, 34.3% from beyond the arc, and 84.2% from the line.
Both teams were equal on the glass as they each grabbed 37 rebounds.
Steele finished the game with 26 points and 11 rebounds. He was 8 of 9 from the line. Teammate Robert Harris tallied 19 points while finishing with a team-high five three-pointers made. He also finished with a team-high three steals.
Kade Paul added 13 points of his own, while both Tanner Higgins and Yuta Yamamoto each finished with 12.
Point will close out the home season on Saturday when it hosts Faulkner University at 4 p.m.
