Women's Volleyball Advances to Tournament Semifinal with Win Over William Carey

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The No. 6 Point University women's volleyball team finished Pool Play with a 2-1 mark with a 3-1 (14-25, 25-19, 25-16, 25-14) win over No. 3 William Carey University this afternoon at the Southern States Athletic Conference Volleyball Championship. With the win, Point finished second in Pool B in Pool Play. The Skyhawks are now 24-16, while the Lady Crusaders fall to 21-14 on the season.

Point opened up set one with a 3-0 lead, but the Lady Crusaders tied the score after tallying the next three points in a row. Both teams went back and forth to find themselves tied at 12 before William Carey used a 13-2 run to win the set 25-14.

Looking to bounce back in the second set, the Skyhawks took a 7-4 lead to start things off. Point then pushed its lead to 12-7, the Lady Crusaders put together a 10-6 run to trail 18-17 before tying the set at 18. The Skyhawks used a 7-1 run to close the set out with a 25-19 win and tie the match at one.

Point took an early 6-4 lead in set three, but William Carey took a 7-6 lead after scoring the next three points. The Skyhawks retook the lead following a 7-2 run to put them up 13-9, and after that, they never looked back as they went on to a 25-16 win and went up 2-1 in the match.

Looking to close the match out, Point wasted no time in set four as it found itself tied at 2-2. The Skyhawks used a 13-2 run to go up 15-4, but William Carey tallied three straight points to take the lead to 15-7. Point after that put the set away to win 25-14 and take the match 3-1.

Point as a team hit .330 to William Carey's .189. The Skyhawks hit a set-high .571 in the fourth set.

Skyhawks Tianna Kynard, Claire Cordell, and Paige Lowe each tied for the team lead in kills with nine. Lowe also finished with a double-double in assists with 35 and digs with 11. She hit .563 for the match.

Jasmyn Ceasar and Cordell paced the team in aces with three each. As a team, Point tallied nine aces.

Kynard finished with seven block assists while Ceasar recorded five of her own.

 Point will face Mobile today at 6:30 p.m. in the semifinals.
