Men's Lacrosse Pulls Away in Fourth to Secure 12-8 Victory
After falling behind 3-0 and trailing 3-1 after the first quarter of play, the Point University Men's Lacrosse Team outscored Huntingdon, 11-5, over the next three quarters to come away with the 12-8 victory. The win marks the first of the Skyhawks' 2026 campaign and evens their record at 1-1.
Huntingdon controlled play for most of the first quarter, limiting Point to just two shots on goal while assembling a 3-0 lead with 5:21 to play in the first quarter. Huntington won the faceoff after their third goal and took three shots on that possession, but Point goalie Whittman Prewitt saved the second shot and the cage behind him saved the third, keeping it 3-0. The shot off the post turned into a brief momentum swing for the Skyhawks as, after the clear, Rodney Oakley got Point on the board with his first of the day, making it 3-1 with 2:40 to go. Point took three more shots in the final minutes, but they were all turned away and Point went into the second quarter trailing 3-1.
The second quarter opened with a bit of back and forth action, but after Aaron Mordarski picked up the ground ball after a Huntington turnover, Point settled into their offense. They got a good look and capitalized as Shaun McLaughlin made it 3-2 with 9:15 until halftime. The ensuing faceoff was won by Point, and after a penalty on Huntington for illegal procedure, Mordarski evened the score, finding the back of the net on the assist from McLaughlin. Point struck again nearly two minutes later as Zachary Covey gave the Skyhawks their first lead of the day with an unassisted goal with 6:26 to go in the second quarter.
After the flurry of goals had momentum clearly in favor of Point, Huntington worked to settle back in. They won the faceoff on a violation, then started applying pressure to the Point defense. Prewitt came up with a save on the first Huntington attempt, but not the second as the score was tied with 3:26 to go. A tripping penalty put Point back on the man-up attack with 1:12 on the clock and it took just 17 seconds for the Skyhawks to cash in as Modarski scored his second man-up goal in as many attempts to put Point back up by 1 at 5-4, this goal being assisted by Oakley. Huntingdon did have two shots in the final minute, but Prewitt made the first save and the second sailed wide as Point led 5-4 at the break.
Huntington quickly tied the score at 5-5, scoring just one minute into the third quarter, but Point would rattle-off three-straight goals to make it 8-5 with 4:39 left in the frame. The first goal was scored by Covey just 17 seconds after Huntington tied the game, then came Tyler Kelly's first of the game at the 6:16 mark to give Point its first multi-goal lead of the game. Almost two minutes later, Oakley would score his second of the afternoon, with an assist to McLaughlin, to put Point up 8-5. Huntington did not go away, however, as they would score twice before the end of the third quarter to make it 8-7 heading into the final 15 minutes of play.
Their run continued into the fourth quarter, aided by penalties by Point. The Skyhawks had two men off the field for 25 seconds early in the fourth quarter, but despite being able to kill off one penalty, Point was unable to burn the time on the second penalty and Huntington tied the game at 8 apiece with 12:30 to play. It took nearly 7 and a half minutes for the next goal, but it was Oakley who completed his hat trick and scored the crucial go-ahead goal with 5:01 on the clock, putting Point up 9-8. The pressure was on Huntington to break the Skyhawks' defense, but all that did was open up the counterattack for Point. The Skyhawks tacked on goals by Jamison Cross and McLaughlin shortly after successful clears, then McLaughlin completed the hat trick on the ensuing faceoff to finish off the 12-8 victory.
Oakley and McLaughlin each had 3 goals and 2 assists on the day. Mordarski and Covey each had 2 goals while Kelly and Cross each had 1 for Point's scoring. Point was outshot 40-28 and 24-18 in shots on goal, but Prewitt stood tall time and time again, registering 16 saves in the contest, 14 of which came in the final three quarters, including 6 in the final frame.
Point has a bit of a break until their next game which is set for February 17th at 3:00 p.m. at Brevard College.
