Covey’s 13-Point Performance Leads Point Past Brevard College 20-5

BREVARD, N.C. — Powered by a career performance from Zachary Covey and a relentless offensive effort, the Point Skyhawks rolled to a 20-5 road win over the Brevard College Tornadoes on Tuesday afternoon, pulling away early and never looking back.

The Skyhawks seized control in the first quarter with a 7-1 surge and effectively put the game out of reach before halftime, leading 12-3 at the break. Covey was at the center of nearly everything Point did in the decisive opening stretch, finishing with four goals and nine assists for a 13-point afternoon that paced a balanced attack. Point outscored Brevard in every quarter, including a 6-2 final frame to close out the nonconference victory.

Point's efficiency and volume on offense set the tone. The Skyhawks fired 52 shots, putting 34 on goal, and shared the ball throughout, recording 16 assists on 20 goals. Covey's playmaking led the way, but he had plenty of help. Malyke Sillers matched Covey's four goals, while Rodney Oakley added three goals and an assist. Shaun McLaughlin chipped in one goal and six assists, repeatedly initiating offense from up top and on the wings.

The early turning point came in the first quarter, when Point quickly built a multi-goal cushion and never seized momentum. Aaron Mordarski's first-quarter strike off a Covey feed helped push the lead to 3-0, and the Skyhawks closed the period up 7-1 after Covey scored again in the final minute off an assist from McLaughlin. Point kept the pressure on in the second quarter as Sillers and Carlos Thompson found the net, with Thompson scoring off another McLaughlin assist to extend the margin. By the time Sillers converted again late in the third quarter on a pass from Covey to make it 13-3, the Skyhawks were firmly in control.

Brevard College generated some answers behind the efforts of Gage Khayat and Max Dorman, but the Tornadoes could not keep pace with Point's depth and ball movement. Khayat scored in the second quarter to trim the deficit briefly, and Dorman added a man-up goal in the fourth quarter on a feed from Khayat. The Tornados managed 20 shots, 14 on goal, but were limited to just two goals after halftime as Point's defense and goalkeeping tightened.

Possession play also leaned toward the Skyhawks despite Brevard's work at the X. Point finished with a 29-10 advantage on faceoffs overall, highlighted by specialist Alee Destine, who went 10-for-14 and picked up eight ground balls. The Skyhawks collected 53 ground balls to the Tornadoes' 34 and were able to turn those extra possessions into extended offensive sets, even while committing 19 turnovers. Point successfully managed six penalties for 5:30, matching Brevard's 5:30 in penalties.

The victory moves the Skyhawks to a 2-1 record as their road swing in North Carolina continues tomorrow with a 4:00pm matchup at Warren Wilson College.
